Step 1 - Online Study Guide

In order to qualify to take the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test, you must first complete and pass our Online Study Guide (OSG). Our free Transport Canada-approved Online Study Guide fully prepares you to readily pass the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test, after which we can issue you a permanent Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).

This Online Study Guide has been approved by Transport Canada strictly on the basis that it meets the requirements of the Standard for Pleasure Operator Card Testing over the Internet (TP 15080E) and the Boating Safety Course and Test Syllabus (TP 14932E). This approval does not represent confirmation of authorship by the course provider.

You'll first need to register. Registration creates an account that gives you access to the full Online Study Guide and keeps track of your progress as you proceed through the OSG at your own pace.

The OSG is composed of seven (7) chapters that explain the key boating safety concepts that will prepare you to pass the Transport Canada PCOC Test.

The chapters in the online Study Guide must be completed in sequence (i.e.: you must complete Chapter 1 before going on to Chapter 2, and so on), and you must pass the 10-question review quiz at the end of each chapter with a score of 80% or more before moving on to the next chapter.

Step 2 - Write the PCOC Test online

The PCOC Test is open book and unsupervised. To qualify to take the Boating Safety Test for the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) online from our site, you must first complete our free Online Study Guide (OSG).

Once you have successfully completed the OSG, our system will give you access to the online Boating Safety Test. The test will take about one hour or less to complete (but you have up to 75 minutes). It is unsupervised and since it is an open-book test you are allowed to refer back to the Online Study Guide during the test (you can also download a PDF-format, printable version of the Online Study Guide to assist you).

If you pass the PCOC Test, our system will record that you passed and allow you to order one or more Pleasure Craft Operator Cards, as well as to print a temporary card.

If you do not pass the PCOC Test on your first attempt, the system will let you try again after waiting 24 hours. There is no charge for repeat attempts to pass the PCOC Test. If you fail your second attempt to pass the PCOC Test, you must complete the Online Study Guide and its quizzes over again before trying the PCOC Test again.

Step 3 - Getting your permanent PCOC

After you pass the PCOC Test, our system will allow you to order one or more PCOCs.

Since it will take about four (4) weeks for your PCOC(s) to arrive at your address by mail, our system will also allow you to print a temporary certificate.

The temporary certificate shows an expiry date that is 60 days after the date you passed your PCOC Test and serves as your temporary proof of competency until your permanent PCOC(s) arrive by Canada Post first class mail.
